Discover the Magic of Changthang Pashmina: Unveiling the Hidden Beauty and Tradition of Ladakh’s Soft Gold

Embarking on a Journey to Ladakh’s Changthang Pashmina: Unveiling the Origins of the World’s Finest Pashmina

In the face of freezing temperatures and challenging altitudes, our adventure took us deep into the Changthang region of Ladakh, where we sought to uncover the origins of the world’s most exquisite pashmina.

Braving the harsh cold and thin air, our path led us to the heart of Changthang, a remote region in Ladakh, where the journey of the world’s finest pashmina begins.

As I stood surrounded by sheep and goats, I could sense their exhaustion after a long day of trekking. However, sleep eluded them. In the midst of fatigue, fear, and cold, some animals attempted to seek refuge inside the only permanent structure in the village, driven by the relentless rain and hail. We found ourselves in Kharnak, a village nestled in the Tibetan Plateau of Ladakh. Situated at an altitude of approximately 5,000 meters, Kharnak serves as the summer settlement for the semi-nomadic Changpa people and their yaks, horses, dogs, sheep, and the soft-bellied goats known as Changra, which produce the coveted pashmina wool.

A Night to Remember

That night was anything but ordinary. Rainwater seeped into the rebos—the hexagonal tents made of thick yak wool, serving as the mobile homes of the Changpas—making it nearly impossible for them to sleep soundly. “I’ve been camping here for years, both with and without tourists, but I’ve never witnessed such heavy rain and thunderstorms,” remarked Jiwan Kaur, my travel companion from LIFE on the PLANET LADAKH, a Ladakh-based travel company dedicated to creating mindful travel experiences. We were on their Pashmina Trail, a journey co-curated by another travel company, The Extra Mile. This unique itinerary includes a workshop on Cashmere and wool dyeing and weaving, a visit to a private textile museum, camping in Changthang, and explorations of the Alchi Monastery and other nearby sites.

Discovering Pashmina in Changthang

Changthang captivated me more than any other destination on our journey, even though I grappled with occasional headaches and nausea from the high altitude. Known as the land of Ladakh’s ‘soft gold’—a term that aptly describes the precious pashmina—the region’s allure is both historical and contemporary. This coveted fabric, which has sparked conflicts among Sikhs, Mughals, British, and Tibetans throughout history, remains one of the most luxurious textiles on the global market.

Despite its fame, life in Changthang remains strikingly modest. The semi-nomadic Changpas lead a life of constant movement, migrating four times a year to find fresh pastures for their animals. They journey across the valleys of Rupshu, Kharnak, Tso Moriri, and Mudh. The Changpas craft their own tents and weave rugs from camel and yak hair, though they avoid using pashmina for their winter clothing, as it’s too delicate to withstand the -35°C temperatures.

Fortunately, the rain ceased by morning, allowing me to fully appreciate the experience of being among one of the world’s oldest semi-nomadic tribes. By 5 am, Kharnak was bustling with activity.

An elderly woman, wrapped in layers of wool, expertly guided her 300 goats and sheep up the mountain. Nearby, a young woman milked a goat while her younger sister held a baby goat and tried to separate two quarrelsome sheep. Suddenly, frantic shouts of “Madam, madam” alerted me to move aside as a shepherd’s herd came charging towards me. Before I could react, I was surrounded by a lively throng of goats and sheep eager to cross the stream and ascend the mountains. Within moments, they vanished from view, and when I turned back, the village had emptied. The pens and rebos were deserted, leaving behind only the quiet of the early morning.

It was time to return to Leh, where I had spent three days acclimatizing before venturing into Changthang. On my second day in Leh, I visited Lena’s quaint farm and workshop. As a textile enthusiast, I was eager to dive into the world of natural dyeing and weaving Pashmina threads. Sonam Angmo and Stanzin Minglak, the passionate founders of Lena, guided us through the process with infectious enthusiasm.

Our first task involved immersing Pashmina and camel wool threads, spun by the Changpa women, into a pot of boiling marigold dye. After a thorough soak, we rinsed the threads in a nearby stream. We repeated the process with red and pink dyes derived from wood.

Following a quick round of hot kahwa, we proceeded to the most eagerly anticipated part of the workshop: weaving. While the skilled artisans at Lena use traditional backstrap looms, we beginners were given a simpler version—a square wooden frame with parallel strings. As I became absorbed in the rhythmic motions of threading the needle and passing it through the strings, I realized that weaving was both laborious and incredibly calming. By the end of the session, I had crafted a colorful bookmark adorned with tassels. “It’s always surprising how much people enjoy what they initially think is a mundane task,” Angmo remarked, noting my satisfaction with the finished bookmark.

Angmo and Minglak founded their brand in 2016 with a mission to preserve traditional textile techniques while offering sustainable livelihoods to nomadic women and artisans. The fruits of their labor are showcased at the private textile museum of Ladakhi fashion designers Jigmat Norbu and Jigmet Wangmo. Located in Kharyog, the old town of Leh, this three-story museum boasts over 2,500 artifacts, including costumes, textiles, jewelry, and utensils from the 17th century. It also displays pieces from Jigmat Couture, the designers’ ethical fashion brand.

A standout exhibit is a royal robe made from hand-spun Dugri silk, imported from China along the old Silk Road. Adorned with celestial motifs like dragons, the robe conferred a divine status upon its wearer. Outside the museum, the remnants of an ancient caravanserai stand as a testament to the region’s historical significance. “We also had the old Silk Road toll gate here,” Wangmo noted, “but it was destroyed by the military to make way for their trucks.”

The depth of Ladakh’s untapped historical and cultural heritage left me in awe. This journey was my humble attempt to document a fraction of it before the encroaching militarization and climate change potentially erase these precious elements.
