Day 1: Discover the Artistic Beauty of Alchi & Serenity of Lamayuru
Journey from Leh to Alchi: What to Expect
Your adventure begins in Leh, the gateway to Ladakh, where our comfortable vehicle will pick you up early in the morning. The drive to Alchi is approximately 2 hours, taking you through stunning landscapes of the Sham Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional Ladakhi villages, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a yak or two grazing along the hillside.
Stop 1: Alchi Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Upon reaching Alchi, you will be greeted by one of the oldest and most artistic monasteries in Ladakh—Alchi Monastery. This UNESCO-listed site dates back to the 10th century and is renowned for its incredibly preserved murals and intricate wood carvings. The monastery complex contains several temples, all filled with beautiful depictions of Buddhist deities and teachings.

After exploring the intricate artwork and learning about the rich history of the monastery, you’ll have a chance to explore the nearby village of Alchi. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Ladakhi meal at one of the local restaurants before continuing your journey.
Stop 2: Lamayuru Monastery (Oldest Monastery in Ladakh)
Next, we travel another 2 hours to Lamayuru Monastery, one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Ladakh, often referred to as the “Moonland” due to the surrounding lunar-like landscape. Situated at an altitude of 3,510 meters, the monastery is perched atop a dramatic cliff, providing breathtaking views of the valley below.

After spending the afternoon exploring the monastery and soaking in the views, you’ll settle into a cozy guesthouse nearby. This overnight stay allows you to truly immerse yourself in the tranquility of the remote village, surrounded by towering mountains.
Day 2: Meditation at Rizong & Hilltop Views at Pyang
Stop 1: Rizong Monastery (A Paradise for Meditation)
The second day of your Sham Monasteries tour begins with an early breakfast before heading out to Rizong Monastery, a short drive from Lamayuru. Known as the “Paradise for Meditation,” Rizong is a secluded monastery famous for its serene atmosphere and emphasis on deep spiritual practice. This is a perfect place for those looking to engage in mindful meditation and connect with their inner selves.

Stop 2: Pyang Monastery (Hilltop Treasure)
On the way back to Leh, we make our final stop at Pyang Monastery, an often-overlooked yet spectacular monastery that sits atop a hill overlooking the Indus River. The monastery complex is a treasure trove of ancient Buddhist artifacts, vibrant murals, and stunning views of the valley below.

You will spend the afternoon exploring the intricate art and historical relics within the monastery before heading back to Leh in the evening, concluding your two-day journey through the Sham Monasteries.
